National Trust takes heritage education to the sea

The Western Isles Boat Tour is a part of the National Trust’s drive to educate citizens of the heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.

Other tours of the National Trust include: public, cultural and school Tours on Nelson Island. This island is a heritage site that has a diverse history. It was a quarantine station for the East Indians during Indentureship; the site of Tubal Uriah Butler’s incarceration during World War II; the detainment centre for the Black Power Revolutionaries in 1970 and has the oldest roofed building (built in 1802) in continuous use.

Other historical facts of the western isles: •In the 1950’s, Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams was secretly married on Caledonia Island.

•Lenegan Island had an isolation hospital during the Indentureship period.

•Chacachacare Island is the largest of the islands and has several structures which include: a hospital, convent, chapel, doctor’s house and a lighthouse.
