Enough is enough
Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sake and for our own” — Cesar Chavez “He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough” — Lao Tzu. I use these two quotes to counter arguments by two respectable men, Rudy Indarsingh and Reginald Dumas, with regard to the salary package of the procurement regulator. Dumas is quoted as saying, “...
these people must have clear and proven probity, who will not yield to any temptation.” Indarsingh on the other hand said the salaries were inadequate as the procurement regulator will have oversight over State boards where people are paid higher monthly salaries than the regulator. What factors are used to determine a person’s salary? Is it qualifications, experience, responsibility, other people’s salary, all of the above? I am by no means calling into question the integrity of any individual selected for the job.
All I am asking is when is enough enough and does a high salary mitigate against accepting inducements? We all have heard and endorsed the statement “to err is human.” “The love of money as a possession as distinguished from the love of money as a means to enjoyments and realities will be recognised for what it is...” — John Maynard Keynes.
Could it not be argued that the salaries of the President and Prime Minister be even higher based on what is purported by Dumas and Indarsingh? Just asking.
