Seunath: Wipe JLSC slate clean

The former Vice President of the Law Association held the view along with President of the Southern Assembly of Lawyers Reshard Khan, that the current bantering in public on the issue, is doing more harm to the judiciary than good.

Instead of giving legal opinions, Seunath added, senior counsel in the country should seek an audience with Chief Justice Ivor Archie on the matter.

What is most unfortunate, he added, is that there are those who would not lose sleep over what he describes as the, “agony of the unprotected.” Seunath said that for too long, citizens have been shortchanged by the exercise of power and authority in appointments to the Supreme Court.

The Ayers-Caesar issue, he insisted, must not be swept under the carpet.

The time has come for the exercise of Constitutional authority, Seunath said, to settle the imbroglio, for it would put to rest the public spat on the issue.

He said that now was the opportune time to look at judicial appointments and create a more open system.

It presents the opportunity for TT to create its own system in selecting judges that will put an end to what he described as “pockets in society” which determine how one is promoted to higher office, “based on which Church you go to etc, etc.” It has become almost like a cult, Seunath said.
