Make way to Madamas Waterfall
In the centre of the community is the Visitors Facility where home-made refreshments and information on its natural resources are available. Leading us to the river is The Madamas Road which is eight kilometres in length and is situated on its eastern end.
Along the route, the landscape is beautified with the greenery of christophene vineyards, which grow in the valleys alongside the trail. The Sobo River crosses the footpath, and a ten-minute diversion is presented by the sensational Double River Falls.
The floods that occurred in the Northern Range on November 30, 2016 in northeast Trinidad changed the landscape, and many of the rivers and waterfalls took on a new appearance. Strangely, nature purges and at the same time gives back. The popular bathing spot,Macajuel Pond, on the Madamas River where a deep basin existed has now vanished. However, further upstream the Madamas Waterfall has been blessed with a deeper pond and larger pool. To access these pools, the route to the river is the same, however, one is downstream while the other is upstream.
The expedition to the Madamas Fall’s starts at Pole No 90 on the Madamas Road and the estimated time to get there will take two-and-a-half-hours.
The first path of the journey is a five kilometre flat walk along the Madamas Road to the river. The trail narrows and continues through the forest over a ridge that descends higher upstream. The river, at this point, is shallow and easy to walk. The falls is located a further 20 minutes upstream.
The Madamas falls is 30-foot high with a single drop and pool.
Above the falls, there are other waterfalls to discover along the two tributaries. Prominent flowers growing alongside the riverbank are the Maraval lilies (Spathiphyllum Cannifolium), mountain roses (Brownea Coccinea) and the hot lips (Psychotria Poeppigana).
