Zero tolerance on illegal vending in Arima

In a statement on Monday, Morris-Julien said indiscriminate vending at key entrances to the market was hampering pedestrian traffic.

Morris-Julien said she also supported moves by the Inspector of the Municipal Police to crack down on illegal vending.

The mayor said the back entrance of the market will remain cordoned off in an effort to prevent this area from being populated by illegal vendors “who have encroached on the sidewalks to ply their trade.” Morris-Julien noted that although these vendors have been assigned stalls within the market, they preferred to catch their sales by illegal means.

“The council remains resolved in its zero tolerance approach to all forms if illegal vending, It has therefore embarked on a project to construct secure market stalls to improve the working conditions for legal vendors,” she said.
