Family Day bloodshed

Twelve pints of blood were donated by police officers to facilitate surgery on the leg of Ag Insp Kevin Greene of Northern Division who remains warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EW MSC) in Mt Hope.

According to reports at about 9.05 pm on Tuesday, Ag Insp Greene who is based at the Arouca police station was with other officers on extra duty at the Sports and Family Day when they cautioned Keegan Jones, 20, about his abusive behaviour toward two female relatives.

Jones, 20, who appeared to be intoxicated, left the recreation ground and returned with a gun.

He shot Greene in the left leg.

As other officers who witnessed the shooting, drew their weapons and called on Jones to drop his weapon, he turned on them and opened fire. The officers returned fire and Jones was shot dead.

The shootout led to frightened patrons including children and elderly people scampering for safety and the Family Day came to an abrupt end as the recreation ground became a crime scene.

The same female relatives of Jones, began screaming hysterically on learning he was dead and had to be restrained by others.

Yesterday, President of the Police Social Welfare Association Inspector Michael Seales described Ag Insp Greene as a dedicated officer and added that the association’s members are praying for his swift recovery.

Green has been a member of the service for 26 years. Investigations are continuing.
