St Augustine retain table tennis crown at UWI Games
Playing at the Barbados Table Tennis Center, Mona took the lead through Jermaine James, who defeated Zaeem Imbaraaz 11-6, 11-7, 14-12.
Yet to drop a set in the tournament, Catherine Spicer tied up the tie for her team with a comfortable victory over Vanessa Moo-Young 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.
The Jamaican campus took the 2-1 advantage as the tournament’s Most Valuable Male Player (MVP) Mark Phillips won easily against Kwame Rodriguez 11-6, 11-7, 11-5.
Once again, the St Augustine Pelicans needed a female player to ensure stability in the encounter and this time it was Brittany Joseph.
She won the tournament’s female MVP and it showed as she whipped Chinelle Miller 11-4, 11-3, 11-7.
Then, Mona went ahead again through the pair of James/Phillips winning the male doubles easily against Rodriguez/Imbararaaz 11-6, 11-6, 11-8) allowing them to lead 3-2.
The St Augustine female pair of Spicer/ Ambika Sitram ensured that the match-up will go the full length and that the women will play unbeaten as they crushed Mona’s pair Moo-Young/Miller 11- 4, 11-6, 11-5.
Tied at 3-3, the mixed doubles was the decider to determine the champion.
The duo of Rodriguez/ Joseph wasted little time against Phillips/ Miller as they took the first two sets comfortably to ease their nerves.
Unfortunately they relaxed a bit in the third set which allowed Mona to win the set making it 2-1.
Coach Andrew Edwards, supporters and Major David Benjamin (Director of Sports- St Augustine) inspired them at the start of the fourth set to close off the match in crushing style winning 11-7, 11- 8, 5-11, 11-3.
Speaking after lifting the female MVP trophy, Joseph said, “It was a gratifying feeling, especially as the men lost their games it made us to dig deeper. It was an amazing feeling because I was able to contribute to the team’s victory.” Other scores: Netball - St. Augustine defeated Open Campus 46-24.
Tennis - St Augustine defeated Cave Hill 3-2.
