Going Rogue in 2018

Guests braved the inclement weather to gather at the corner of Taylor Street and Ariapita Avenue to see the unveiling of the band’s costumes, which was done in an unusual way. A big truck with the masqueraders left Rosalino Street and made its way to the venue, parked for a while, and without the masqueraders getting off the truck, beckoned guests to get behind the truck and take a Carnival style jumpup around the block. Eventually, upon its return, the masqueraders descended to give guests a closer look at the costumes.

The sections are named Raven, Rebirth, Renegade, Revolt, Rise, Racy, Reign, Risqué and Rapture, with designs by Valmiki Maharaj, Kirk Thomas, Lauren Austin, Tracy Boyce, JP Richardson, Monique Nobrega and Richard & Anthony Designs.

Asked why all the section names begin with R, Jules Sobion of Rogue said: “We just tried to find characteristics of a rogue that all begin with R.” The band that boasts of an alternative concept in mas, is a partnership between Tribe and Caesar’s Army, making it a fifth band of the former - Lost Tribe, Bliss and Tribe, totally under its wing, its partnership with Harts Carnival and now Rogue Carnival.

Road management and machinery will all be done by Tribe, but Caesar’s Army insists that it will be an alternative Monday and Tuesday mas concept by its outfit.

Rogue is targeting masqueraders who appreciate the Tribe experience but who desire a different product. This product includes premium all-inclusiveness, non-stop pump, mobile lunch bars as there will be no lunch stop once the band gets in motion from 11am, and one male section called the Rogue Roamers, comprising masqueraders who can roam the band and “jam any woman, in any section”. Organisers say this is strictly all about fun.

Sobion said: “We are like a rolling stone, a game changer, thinking outside the box. We are still working out the changes but there are things that are going to be uniquely different in the band.”
