Music to rejuvenate the spirit
THE EDITOR: The news stories of the day especially the newspaper headlines can be very depressing and nerve wrecking. Very rarely we read about or hear good news coming from the various media newsrooms, how sad! The good news if it does appear is not as glaring as the other frightening news headlines. I want to share some good news with my fellow readers. In the last two months, I have discovered Radio Gold 99.5 FM, very soothing and calming music, music from the 1950s through to the 1980s. Music I grew up with as a child and through my teenage years. It has been a source of inspiration. The music I will always cherish.
Presently we are in the midst of the 2005 Carnival season, and the music sounds like that of last year’s and the year before, and the year before. The music is about, “jump,” “wave,” “hand in the air,” “wave yuh rag,” etc, etc. The same old repetitious one line refrain, it is loud and coarse, and the louder the music is played the better it sounds, yeah right! To hear or appreciate good kaiso music, you have to visit the calypso tents or purchase CD’s illegally on the streets, does that really make sense? We have begun to accept “mediocracy” as a way of life here in Trinbago, we have become so comfortable and complacent about the same issues over and over. The youth of the day have no appreciation or have no concept of what music is all about. Since the introduction of Radio Gold 99.5 FM, I don’t have to be subjected to the meaningless, senseless, nonsense which is now passing as/for calypso. The music of Radio Gold has rejuvenated my spirits, and usually puts me in a nostalgic mood. So for those mature citizens who grew up with music of that era, here is a chance to reminisce about the good old days; and why not?
