Printing industry needs market aggression
The local printing and packaging industry (PPI) employs approximately 4,500 individuals with close to 163 firms covering, a wide range of areas including, paper manufacturing, publishers, commercial printers, label manufacturers, screen printing, plastics, plastic packaging, film/lamination, glass and metals. At a PPI presentation at Tidco headquarters, Maritime Plaza, stakeholders were given an insight into the proposed strategic plan for their industry, developed by PPI and the Ministry of Trade. Galya St Clair-Douglas, senior economist at Trade Ministry and a member of the team, said that the PPI was a critical economic sector with key linkages to other sectors.
The PPI, she said, was developing rapidly with high quality materials and technologically advanced equipment which made products designed to exceed customer expectations. In this regard, she said, the draft strategic plan was designed to chart a course for the sustainable development of the local PPI sector, to ensure that our companies could compete and thrive in the demanding global environment. Among the preliminary findings, it was found that players needed to be more aggressive in regional and international markets.
