Mother of five killed in accident
A 50-year-old Maraval mother of five became the country’s 19th road fatality victim for the year when she succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck by a car in Westmoorings. Reports revealed that around 8.25 pm on Wednesday, Michael Rostant was driving his car east along Westmoorings, in the vicinity of Columbus Circle, and on reaching the traffic lights came into contact with a pedestrian. Rostant told police investigators that two women ran in front of his car causing Joseph to be struck by the right front fender. The other pedestrian escaped injuries.
Joseph, a Pentagon security guard, was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by EHS officers and died around midnight. During the same period last year, 33 persons had been killed in road accidents. Up until yesterday, four persons were killed in road accidents for the month. All four were pedestrians. ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein told Newsday that while he is pleased with the decrease in road deaths, he urged pedestrians and motorists to exercise more caution on the roads.
ACP Hosein advised pedestrians to desist from crossing when traffic lights are on green. He also called on the public to use the walkovers instead of taking chances of crossing busy roadways with a constant flow of traffic. Yesterday, Anthony Joseph, a son of the deceased, described his mother as a very peaceful person. He said she was the main breadwinner in the family and he was not sure how to make ends meet with the death of his mother.
His father, Anthony Sr, is a gardener. Joseph said his mother was on her way to secure transportation to take her home when she was killed. He said his mother was a very responsible person, and he was convinced that she did not cross the road when the traffic lights were on green. He is calling for a thorough probe into the death of his mother.
Officers of the Four Roads Police Station are investigating.
