AG calls for restraint

Attorney General John Jeremie yesterday expressed concern over the continuing publication in the media of information “which now form the basis of matters before the Prime Minister regarding the Chief Justice.” In a release issued yesterday, the Attorney General called for restraint, stating: “These matters are deeply sensitive, and while not currently before any court of law, can be considered prejudicial to the parties involved and to other cases now before the court.”

While noting that freedom of expression and freedom of the press are entrenched freedoms in the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago, Jeremie said he wanted to advise members of the national community, including the media, to approach this issue “with the level-headed restraint exemplified by the Prime Minister’s statement to the Senate last Tuesday.” The statement comes on the heels of the publication of information from the statements of the Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson, the Attorney General and Chief Justice Sat Sharma in the media.
