Chilean president pays visit to TT
Chilean President H E Dr Ricardo Lagos Escobar is to hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Patrick Manning this morning, after which the two leaders will hold a joint news conference. But before this, the Chilean president will pay a courtesy call on President George Maxwell Richards. At noon, the visiting head of state will be the main guest at a luncheon hosted by President Richards at President’s House. After the luncheon, Escobar will head for the airport in time for a 2 pm departure from Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago and Chile established diplomatic relations in 1964. Chile enjoys a favourable balance of trade with Trinidad and Tobago. Major imports from Chile are wine, black peas, tomato paste, fibreboards and toothpaste. Trinidad and Tobago’s major exports to Chile are refrigerator parts, aromatic bitters, natural asphalt, machine parts and plastic ware. Chile is reportedly one of the countries which is supporting Trinidad and Tobago’s bid to be the headquarters of the FTAA.
