Cops probe cops over murder suspect’s escape

An investigation has been ordered into the escape of a murder suspect in Couva last week. Reports revealed that a 28-year-old woman was detained at the Couva Police Station on allegations of malicious wounding last Thursday. While at the station, homicide investigators recognised the woman as the suspect in a murder inquiry into the death of  a 14-year-old schoolboy last year. The information was made available to other officers at the Couva Police Station.

Newsday learnt that homicide officers in Couva called the Homicide Bureau in Port-of-Spain, and made arrangements for the suspect to be handed over for questioning. The suspect reportedly told CID officers that she needed a change of clothing and requested to be taken to her Point Lisas home. Officers heeded the woman’s request. On reaching the house, the woman managed to elude the officers and escaped. Assistant Commissioner James Philbert, who is on leave, was at the station when the incident occurred, and senior officers were told of the incident. An investigation was later launched into the escape.
