Man gunned down in gang warfare
ANOTHER Morvant resident was shot dead yesterday in the continuing saga of reprisal shootings. Dead is Stephan Bellamy, 20, alias “Joker Face” of Pitch Road, Never Dirty, Morvant. According to reports, Bellamy was sitting with three men outside a house on Woods Alley, Never Dirty, playing dominoes around 11.30 am, when a gunman walked up to him, pulled out a gun and pointed it towards him. The three men scampered, but heard several shots as they ran. They returned a short while after to find Bellamy’s body on its back. His head was over a drain and there were two bullet wounds to his skull. The police were contacted 30 minutes later, and the District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre for autopsy on Monday.
Police believe the shooting is a reprisal for the murder of Elijah Brown on Wednesday morning at Morvant Junction. Bellamy and another man who has gone into hiding, were the two main suspects in Brown’s murder. Brown lived two houses away from where Bellamy was gunned down. Bellamy murder is the 49th for the year. The deceased, who was released from prison two weeks ago after serving time for robbery, was released from police custody Thursday night as a suspect in a robbery, hours before he was killed. Brown and Bellamy were members of two gangs in the area. Police are hunting for Bellamy’s friend, who discharged himself from hospital recently and who they believe orchestrated Brown’s murder.
When Newsday visited the Pitch Road home of the deceased, relatives refused to speak. Residents at Woods Alley, who first claimed they did not know Bellamy, later told Newsday that they had seen him in the area regularly, but knew little of him. “All we know is sometimes he is in jail, sometimes he is in Maloney Gardens, and sometimes we see him walking a dog in the area.” Another resident told Newsday she believes he was set up by another man for whom he was waiting, but never came. Visiting the scene were Snr Supt Bishop, ASP Yearwood, Insp Coa, Sgt Abraham, Cpls Vidale and McMillan and PC Martin. Cpl McMillan is investigating.
