PM talks LNG with congressman

PRIME Minister Patrick Manning met US Congressman Richard Pombo to discuss the role of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Trinidad and Tobago in the energy security of the United States. The duo met at the Prime Minister’s residence last Saturday evening. Also at the meeting were Minister of Energy, Eric Williams, US Ambassador Dr Roy Austin, and bpTT chairman Robert Riley.

The Prime Minister used the 45-minute meeting to discuss several new developments in the energy sector to reassure the congressman of Trinidad and Tobago’s continued commitment to providing a sustainable supply of LNG to the US. Last year, more than 70 percent of US LNG imports came from Trinidad and Tobago.

Congressman Pombo is chairman of the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Resources. He is also co-chairman of the House Speaker’s Task Force on Affordable Natural Gas. This body examines the impact of LNG prices on the US economy and explores short and long-term ideas to encourage a stable supply of natural gas to ease prices. Congressman Pombo, who represents California’s Eleventh Congressional District, was sworn in to his seventh term in the House in January 2005.
