Maraval vet kidnapped

VETERINARIAN Azizmul Rahaman, owner of Jones Animal Clinic at 15 La Sieva Road, Maraval, was kidnapped early on Tuesday morning at his clinic. According to reports, Dr Rahaman had just walked out of surgery about 8 am, when he was approached by two men with a dog pretending to be clients. The men drew two firearms and told Rahaman and the two employees to lie on the ground. One of them took Dr Rahaman to his office, where he was tied up. The men then tied up the two staff members,  dragged the screaming doctor to a grey B 13 car, and sped off. Up to press time, there had been no ransom demands for his release.

When Newsday visited the Maraval clinic yesterday where Dr Rahaman also resides, a relative said the family would not speak to the press. However, the relative was willing to plead, through the media, for the release of the veterinarian who she said is an elderly, frail man suffering from heart disease and hypertension. The relative said Dr Rahaman needs his daily medication to survive. The woman also said he has done much good for people, and is a kind, gentle person who is loved by his family and clients. The relative pleaded with the abductors to release the veterinarian unharmed as soon as possible.

Police sources, who said the investigations were very sensitive, refused to provide information. However, sour-ces told Newsday they believed the abductors had inside information on exactly when there would only be a few employees around, as the office is usually filled with employees, security and clients. Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Dr Rahaman is asked to contact the Anti-Kidnapping Squad at 623-6793 or Crime Stoppers at 800-tips.
