Abductors release Maraval vet

MARAVAL VETERINARIAN Dr Azizmul Rahaman was released unharmed Friday night, four days after he was abducted from his La Sieva Road clinic. Police said Rahaman was set free in the vicinity of the Lady Young Road Flyover in Morvant. He managed to flag down a car, identified himself to the driver and was taken to the Belmont Police Station. Officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad were contacted and they took Rahaman to a medical facility where he was examined.

Sources told Sunday Newsday no ransom was demanded and none was paid. They reported that the elderly doctor appeared unharmed. Yesterday, at Rahaman’s Flagstaff Hill, Long Circular home, he and relatives remained behind closed doors and declined media requests for interviews. The La Sieva clinic was closed and efforts to contact  Rahaman’s secretary and relatives were futile. Rahaman was abducted from the clinic on Tuesday morning by two men with a dog who pretended to be clients. He had just come out of surgery when he was snatched.

Reports are that relatives and friends, who held nightly prayer vigils for Rahaman’s safe return, were planning a prayer session to give thanks for his safe return. Meanwhile, relatives of Glencoe housewife Tamen Abraham, who was abducted on Friday, said they have not heard from her abductors. “Right now we are still in the dark as to the reason for the abduction and what the abductors want,” a worried family member said yesterday. Police said they are investigating several leads.
