Six murders in 7 days
Six persons have been murdered in the first seven days of March. Thirty four persons were murdered in violent circumstances between February 1 and yesterday, and 58 persons have been murdered for the year. There were 45 murders in the same period last year. Police said that most of the murders were gang killings and were committed with guns. Last week, the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) was strengthened with additional manpower. One hundred police and soldiers were added to the IATF to deal with the increasing murder rate.
The figures for March are as follows:
March 2: Jason Pierre alias Gumbo, a purse snatcher was shot in the back at Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain over a stolen cell phone.
Johnatan Pierre, 21, of Clovis Street, Maraval, was shot several times at Harding Place, Cocorite, and died under a house at Freedom Street, Cocorite.
March 3: The unidentified body of a man bearing chop wounds to the head and arms was discovered at Beetham Estate.
March 4: Richard Parris, 30, of no fixed place of abode, was found dead at a St James car park. He had been beaten to death.
March 6: Sheldon John, 20, was shot dead at Thompson Street, Carenage. He was the suspect in the murder of German national Jurgen Keck on January 18.
March 7: Zavid Khan, 37, a fisherman of Orange Valley Road, Carapichaima, was found dead in a canefield close to his home.
