Jamaat man held with two pistols

BAIL was refused by a San Fernando Magistrate yesterday for a man who was charged with possession of two Browning nine-millimetre semi-automatic pistols. The 24-year-old accused, who police claim is a member of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen organisation, was allegedly held in Vistabella on Wednesday around 2 pm, by members of the Firearms Interdiction Unit (FIU). During a search, the officers allegedly found and seized the two pistols. He was arrested and taken to the San Fernando CID where charges were laid.

The accused, who is from Cane Street, Vistabella,  reportedly appeared before San Fernando magistrate Sonia Aleong who remanded him into custody and adjourned the case to Monday. Meanwhile, members of the FIU raided the Couva home of a 60-year-old man and seized a Luger nine-millimetre pistol, last Tuesday. The elderly man was taken to the Couva police station where he was charged. He is reportedly out on $50,000 bail and will reappear before a Couva magistrate on Tuesday.
