Vex parents want racial discrimination investigated

FRUSTRATED and angry over delays by the Ministry of Education to address alleged incidences of discrimination at Torrib Trace Presbyterian School, disgruntled parents of children attending the school are threatening heightened protest action this week. The angry parents have formed an affirmative action group called Citizens of Brothers Road, and they wrote to Education Minister Hazel Manning over the alleged acts of discrimination at the school.

The letter, which was signed by group president Earl Davis, stated “the children with dark skin and of African descent are often discriminated by teachers of the school.” “The parents of these children are calling for equal balance of the teaching staff,” the letter added. Davis said parents met with an Education Ministry official whom they gave a week to investigate the matter. But up to yesterday, no response was forthcoming from the ministry.

In an interview yesterday, Davis said parents had agreed to engage in placard demonstrations in front the school during the upcoming week.
Almost three weeks ago, 25 parents accompanied by their children, staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the school’s compound. Efforts to contact Education Ministry officials proved futile.
