Cops warn motorists against foolish driving

Northeastern Division police are warning motorists who are expected to hit the holiday beach resorts — La Fillette, Las Cuevas, Rincon, Maracas Bay, Blanchisseuse and Brasso Seco — in droves during the long Easter weekend, that the long arm of the law will be keeping an eye out for road hogs. According to police, “There will me no mercy on motorists breaking the law over the Easter weekend as they will feel the full brunt of the law. None shall escape.

“The streets in the division, especially the coastal regions, will be ‘loaded.’ There will be a heavy turn out of officers and law-breakers can expect no mercy.” Similarly, ACP Mobile Nazamol Hosein has confirmed that his department will intensify its efforts on the roads and coastal areas over the Easter weekend, and he pleaded with all motorists and pedestrians in all areas to display caution. “While we would be intensifying road check and roadblocks using cycle, foot and mobile patrol, both night and day, with special attention being paid in the coastal areas, the public needs to display caution. “They need to obey the traffic laws. Do not drink and drive and, above all, display caution, patience and courtesy.

“There will be a lot of traffic jams on the roads, especially in areas like the North Coast and Chaguaramas, and motorists and pedestrians need to display caution. We will be looking seriously at these violations, especially at offences like improper overtaking, carrying persons and driving in a dangerous manner and other vehicular offences. Road safety is everybody’s business.” Investigations revealed that out of 30 fatal accidents for the year, half were pedestrians crossing the highways by darting through traffic or crossing at non-crossing points, or improperly dressed. There were 47 fatal accidents reported during the same period last year. The ACP also warned that cyclists, truck drivers and all motorists and pedestrians will be under scrutiny. And although there is no legislation in place yet,  the “Arrive Alive” team will be working in conjunction with the police for the second year with its use of the breathalyser.
