MIRROR EDITOR KEITH SHEPHERD IS DEAD

Keith Shepherd, photo-journalist, Director at the TT News Centre and editor of the Sunday Mirror, has died at the age of 57. Shepherd travelled extensively as a journalist, covering Caribana and political stories, and was also known as a great horse racing fan at the Santa Rosa racetrack. He was recovering at home from a foot injury sustained three weeks ago during a game of “over 40” football at the Aranjuez Savannah, when he suffered a seizure around 1 am Wednesday morning. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he suffered another seizure. He died at 5:45 am.

His wife Sharon said that he died before a Cat scan could be done yesterday morning. The autopsy performed yesterday revealed that death was caused by a sub-arachnoid hemorrhaging, hypertension, spontaneous bleeding and the enlargement of the left side of the heart. Reports indicate that during the football game Shepherd fell and hit his face and leg, but was only being treated for the leg injury. TT News Centre secretary, Mymoona Khan, said he will be greatly missed by all members of staff.

“He was with us for the past 20 years when he worked with the late Patrick Chookolingo at the Bomb newspapers.” Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT) president John Victor said Keith Shepherd’s death came as a shock. “He has left an indelible impression in journalism in Trinidad and Tobago. He assisted newcomers in the profession and his passing is a  sad loss after 40 years. I would like to extend, on behalf of MATT, condolences to his immediate family and the staff of the TT News Centre, and Mirror papers.” The funeral takes place on Friday April 8.
