Security Minister mum on crime-fighting
NATIONAL Security Minister Senator Martin Joseph who yesterday opened the Fire Services sports day at Golden Grove Prisons sports ground in Arouca, shied away from reporters when asked to comment on the crime situation. Asked by this reporter to give his view on the current spiralling crime rate and what realistic measures his ministry planned to implement to deal with crime and lawlessness, Minister Joseph refused to give an answer, saying instead, he wanted to focus on enjoying the family day.
Indeed, the minister received a potential crime-fighting tip from the winning march past team — Central Fire Division — whose samurai fighting display hit on the technique of using the influence of love, peace and unity to curb crime. Junior National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds who was present, also refused to comment on the crime situation, saying he was following the instructions of his senior (Minister Joseph).
Over this weekend alone, three murders were committed while the whereabouts of two of the country’s latest kidnap victims were not known. The murder toll this year now stands at 86, while there have been 14 reported kidnappings for the year, with four victims still in the hands of their abductors. Both Joseph and Hinds promised to address the issues with Newsday sometime today.
