Man killed over woman
AN ARGUMENT over a woman, is believed to have led to the shooting death of a Sangre Grande handyman who was killed Saturday night while riding a bicycle near his home. The murder of Bernard Chaitram, 29, occurred days before he was due to depart for New York to meet his sister. Police said Chaitram was shot through the left eye and on the left side of his neck. Chaitram of La Seiva Trace, Foster Road, Sangre Grande reportedly died on the spot after falling into a drain at the side of the road.
According to police reports, around 11 pm Chaitram was riding his bicycle along Foster Road when on reaching the vicinity of Williams Street, several explosions were heard and he was shot through the eye and neck. Chaitram fell from his bicycle and landed in a drain. Neighbours reported to police seeing a strange car lurking near Chaitram’s home around 9.30 pm that evening. On hearing the gunshots hours later, the neighbours went in search of Chaitram and found his body in the drain. His bicycle remained at the side of the road. A report was made to Sangre Grande police and officers led by Snr Supt Ruthven Bastien, Ag ASP Edmond Thomas, Insp Fermin Roy, Insp Heeralal Choon, Sgt Johnny Abraham, Cpl Beverly Paul, Cpl Clarine Diamond and PCs Baboolal and Wendell Lucas visited the scene.
They recovered nine-millimetre bullet casings at the scene. DMO Dr Shiva Surajdevara viewed the body and ordered it removed to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy is expected to be carried out today. Chaitram’s uncle, Michael Chaitram, described the deceased as a “quiet, responsible young man with many goals in life.” He said Chaitram was preparing to meet his sister Lana in New York and had everything in place for his departure. Up to late yesterday, no arrests had been made and investigations were continuing.
