Kidnappers want $3M for hardware man

THREE million dollars have been demanded by kidnappers for the safe release of Central Trinidad businessmen Davan Bharrathsingh. A cousin of the victim told Newsday yesterday that one of Bharrathsingh’s kidnappers contacted the family at their Edinburgh Village residence in Chaguanas on Monday evening and demanded $3 million.

Bharrathsingh, 34, was kidnapped at his Couva businessplace — Edinburgh Hardware, Mc Bean Village, Couva — on Saturday around 12.15 pm by two armed men. Police were tipped off and chased a yellow Cifero car, while a helicopter privately hired by the Bharrathsingh family attempted a search and rescue mission. However, the police and helicopter crew lost sight of the getaway car.

Meanwhile, 39-year-old Bachan, owner of B and B Heavy Equipment and Transport in Orange Field Road, Carapichaima, was still in the hands of his kidnappers up to yesterday. A $3 million ransom had  also been demanded for his release. Bachan was kidnapped by five armed men last Wednesday around 9.30 pm at his Thompson Trace home in Chaguanas.
