Lucky storms out UNC caucus
Gillian Lucky, UNC MP for Pointe-a-Pierre last evening stormed out of a UNC party caucus at Rienzi Complex during discussions on the Privileges Committee report on the alleged teacup brawl. The report said there was not enough evidence to prove UNC MP for Fyzabad Chandresh Sharma’s claims that he was physically assaulted by PNM Housing Minister, Keith Rowley. Lucky, one of the two Opposition members on the committee, signed the 188-page report which made conclusions against Sharma.
At the caucus last evening Lucky stated “I’m leaving,” and the door slammed. She was followed by three other MPs — Roodal Moonilal, Dr Fuad Khan, and Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan. Shortly before Lucky stormed out the meeting, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday left to fulfil another appointment. But as he stood on the compound speaking to the media, Lucky stormed past him. When Panday was asked what the commotion was about he responded “talk to Mr Singh”, meaning Ganga Singh, who heads the caucus.
Three minutes later, Moonilal, Khan and Seepersad-Bachan returned to the meeting. Lucky returned to the meeting some minutes after them. Kelvin Ramnath came outside and when questioned said no one was questioning the integrity of Lucky. But when asked why she had stormed out of the meeting, he said he did not know. By then, Panday had left to keep his appointment with a radio station. When asked later, Gerald Yetming said during the discussions on the report a few people got upset, but it was “no big thing.” Ganga Singh, chairman of the caucus, denied there was any walkout, but did admit that “emotions ran high” among a few people.
