Fire scorches Trinity Cathedral
THE STEEPLE of the Holy Trinity Cathedral was slightly scorched during the fire which destroyed several businesses in downtown Port-of-Spain yesterday. The historic building, which is approximately 187 years old, appeared to be in imminent danger of being damaged as the fire consumed several nearby structures. Concerned parishioners and church officials quickly removed Bibles and other valuable religious items from the cathedral. The Anglican Bishop Calvin Bess later announced cancellation of all services at Holy Trinity Cathedral for the next two days to allow for the necessary clean up operations in the vicinity. The cathedral, which recently underwent restoration and is a prominent landmark and tourist attraction in the city, was built in 1818 after the original church, a wooden structure built before 1801, was destroyed in the disastrous fire of 1808. According to the late Olga J Mavrogordato in her collection of historical writings, "Voices In The Street," Anglicans worshipped for a while in the Cabildo (Town Hall), until the new cathedral building was completed. The building was consecrated on Trinity Sunday in 1823.
