Strong support for Lucky in Pointe-a-Pierre

Executive members of the Pointe-a-Pierre constituency yesterday expressed unwavering support for their Member of Parliament (MP) Gillian Lucky, one day after Lucky and San Juan/Barataria MP, Dr Fuad Khan, broke from their political leader Basdeo Panday and announced their status as "independent UNC MPs" in the House of Representatives.

Lucky and Khan made the announcement at a news conference in Port-of-Spain on Monday evening. One executive member, who declined to give her name, stated she would tender her resignation if Lucky was forced to leave the party.

At the Pointe-a-Pierre constituency office only the office secretary and a member of the executive were busy manning the phones, which rang continuously. The calls were from constituents stating their support for Lucky.

An executive constituency meeting was also being planned to discuss the issue, which arose when Lucky stormed out of last Thursday’s UNC caucus meeting after a heated confrontation with Panday.

However, the mood was much different at the Marabella market, a stone’s throw away from the constituency offices, with several persons saying both Lucky and Panday should "make back up" for the good of the party. Market vendor, Mary Sultan, said while she would remain a loyal member of the UNC, she said Panday’s "mouth" had created the situation.

"He should apologise to Lucky and bring her back to the party, because right now we need new blood to fight the next elections," she said.

In full agreement was another vendor, Chandroutie Latchman, who said the incident had "hurt" her, as the outspoken MP was especially well liked within the constituency.

"We are all UNC supporters, but this thing did not have to reach this far. They should make up for the good of the people," she said.

According to Abdullah Buckredam, however, both Lucky and Khan should resign from the party since both MP’s had won their electoral seats on a UNC ticket.

"If you not supporting the party, then you should resign and give someone else a chance," he said.
