Belmont man gunned down
A Belmont man, who residents described as a menace, was gunned down in cold-blood on Monday night, in full view of his girlfriend and child. His murder was the 94th in 101 days. Sixty-five people were reported murdered during the same period last year. According to reports, URP foreman Bert Durham, 29, was standing with his girlfriend and one-year-old child at Farrel Lane and Belmont Circular Road at 7.30 pm, not far from his Boissiere Lane home, when a gunman pulled up in a car and fired several shots, hitting him in the stomach. Durham collapsed dead. Police and the DMO were contacted, and the body was ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre. When Newsday visited the man’s Boissiere Lane home in Belmont, the man’s relatives refused to speak with the media, but residents said they were happy to see him go as he was a menace and nuisance. "Durham made people’s lives uncomfortable. Although he had a good job, he simply could not resist carrying on his trade," resident said. Durham was jailed for robberies, shootings and possession of firearms and ammunition on several occasions. The former convict was shot five times in the stomach. Police sources confirmed that Durham had been a terror in the area, and that his killing is related an incident involving several URP workers who were robbed after they were paid recently. Sgt John Ferret is investigating.
