Cop warned over phone in court

A police officer was yesterday warned by a Port-of-Spain magistrate for having his cellphone on during his testimony at the preliminary inquiry being held into the kidnapping of psychologist Ronald John. Warned was Cpl Lucien Julien Elder, of the Court and Process branch Port-of-Spain after his cell phone was heard ringing, not once, but twice while he testified at the kidnapping inquiry. Elder, who is the third witness called by the State to give evidence in the matter, caught Magistrate Ejenny Espinet’s attention when, during his testimony, his cell phone was heard ringing in his pocket.

The police officer, who quickly reached for his phone in his pocket, profusely apologised to the magistrate and explained that he was simply not prepared to come to court. The officer, who was decked in blue track pants and a t-shirt, had earlier apologised for not being properly attired. “Your worship, I did not come prepared today to attend court. I just came from a police exercise in the Rio Claro area, but I still came to the court out of respect,” said Cpl Elder.

An expressionless Espinet responded “Could you make sure your phone is off.” “Yes your worship,” Elder responded. “Is it off,” asked the magistrate. “Yes it is, Your Worship,” replied the witness. Three seconds after the witness’ last response, Elder’s cell phone was heard ringing again. Elder, who was led in evidence by State attorney Denise Badrey was called to give evidence after the kidnap victim’s brother, Carlos John. Hearing resumes on April 28.
