South woman in court for arson

A 50-year-old grandmother appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with burning down her brother’s home on Sunday. As she was being escorted into the court from the Princes Town Police Station, Kamla Bispath-Singh of Knolly Street, Princes Town, sobbed: “Meh eh burn down no house.” Magistrate Indira Misir read the charge to Bispath-Singh, which alleged that she burnt down Barath Bispath-Singh’s house on Sunday morning.

The charge stemmed from a domestic dispute. The magistrate told Bispath-Singh she was not called on to plead because the charge against her was laid indictably. The accused was arrested and charged by PC Hong Ping. Court prosecutor, Sgt Zamsheed Mohammed, did not object to bail being granted to the woman. The magistrate granted Bispath-Singh bail in the sum of $75,000 and adjourned hearing to May 5.
