Chinese seaman killed at sea
OFFICERS of the Besson Street Police Station and the Homicide Department are investigating the death of Chinese seaman Zhao Hong Dan, who was fatally crushed at sea on April 22. According to reports, police received a report of the body around 1 pm yesterday, and went to the Guyanese registered boat "Brisk," which was docked at the National Fisheries port at Sea Lots, where a body was viewed. DMO Dr Clare also visited the scene and ordered the body taken to the Forensic Sciences Centre for an autopsy today. Investigations revealed that Dan, 22, an employee of Import Shipping Logistics Co Ltd, left his job with National Fisheries Ltd, Sea Lots, on October 22 last year to distribute supplies to fishing vessels on the high seas to Trinidad. On April 22 at about 2.20 pm, Dan was doing maintenance work on the anchor in the Atlantic Ocean, when a crew member, not knowing where Dan was working, switched on the engine, crushing the Chinese seaman in the process. The bleeding man succumbed to his injuries about three hours after the incident. The boat, which was on its way to the Port-of-Spain docks at the time, contacted the local office. Police officers waited yesterday while Dan’s associates performed ancient traditional Chinese rituals, before the body was removed. Cpl Carmichael of the Besson Street police is investigating.
