Court hears how Laventille man was killed
A PORT-OF-SPAIN jury and two alternates were yesterday told to expect evidence on how a father and two of his sons on trial for murder, stabbed and beat a Laventille man to death. Jimmy "Shabazz" Bournes, Nigel "Duffo" Mayers and Akeido Mayers, all of Pelican Extension Road, Morvant, are before Justice Prakash Moosai at the Second Criminal Court charged with the April 22, 2003 murder of 22-year-old Andre "X Files" Lindsey. In outlining the State’s case to the jury, prosecutor Natasha George told the jury that on the morning of the fateful day, Lindsey, of Pashley Street, Laventille, went to the compound of the NHA office in Morvant. She told the panel that when the State’s main witness, Otumba Snaggs was called to give evidence, they would hear how Lindsey was stabbed in the back with a knife by Akeido during an argument on the compound. The prosecutor said Snaggs would tell how Lindsey ran but was pursued by the three accused and stabbed several times, then beaten by Bournes with a piece of wood. The jury would hear how Lindsey was subsequently dealt a blow to the head with a stone before the trio fled the scene, George said. According to George, Lindsey was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A post mortem report revealed he had succumbed to internal chest injuries and hemorrhaging resulting from multiple stab wounds. Lindsey’s mother, Gail Lindsey was the first State witness to be called. Bournes, 58, is being represented by attorney Wayne Sturge, while 28-year-old Nigel is represented by Rangee Dolsingh SC and Wendy Doughdeen Bally. Attorneys Hayden Sinclair Douglas and Michelle Solomon appears for 24-year-old Akeido. Prosecutor Cheron Raphael appears with George for the State. Hearing resumes today.
