Students to be suspended for Arouca school fracas
SCHOOL SUPERVISORS investigating Tuesday’s violent incident at the Five Rivers Junior Secondary School in Arouca were expected to send a report by the end of the day to the Ministry of Education. However, some of the students involved in the incident did not show up for classes yesterday. A school official told Newsday they were in the process of contacting parents, as the school was contemplating suspension of the perpetrators. She referred us to a school supervisor for additional information. The ministry’s public relations coordinator, Sharon Balroop, told Newsday once the report was in their possession, a media release would be issued. The violence at the school erupted when a fight broke out among a group of teenaged gang members, after members of one gang refused to hand over their lunches and money to the other gang. Some students were beaten and struck with pieces of concrete, wood, bottles and steel. A total of 20 students were taken to the Arouca Police Station, where they gave statements. They were released in the custody of their parents without being charged.
