Police catch evidence

A 57-year-old man who died after swallowing a live red fish while liming with friends at Monos Island on Tuesday, was accustomed to fooling around with live fishes.

Whitley Job, formerly of Toco, who lived at Mt Hope Road, Mt Hope, was known for fooling around with fishes and boasted about his ability to swallow live fishes. On Tuesday, he tried to demonstrate his ability to swallow a red fish and died. Reports revealed that around 3.15 pm on Tuesday, Job was liming with friends at Monos Island when he took a bet that he could swallow a live red fish. As he placed the wriggling live fish into his mouth, he began choking and complaining of piercing pains. An attempt to pull out the fish was met with sharper pains.

Job was rushed to Staubles Bay where Able Seaman Kong of the Coast Guard also tried to remove the fish.

When this also failed, Job was rushed to the Community Hospital in Cocorite. He died shortly after. An autopsy carried out at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday revealed that Job died from asphyxia. During the autospy, the red fish was removed from the throat of the deceased and handed over to Sgt Adams of the Carenage Police Station.

At Mt Hope where Job lived, the dead man’s wife Maria Job, said she was at home on Tuesday when she was contacted and told to go to the Community Hospital. When she arrived at the hospital, Job was already dead. The saddened woman said her husband was a playful person, always making jokes, but she is unsure why he decided to exercise such a dangerous move. She described her husband as the kind person who always assisted his neighbours. He was a machine operator at Carib Brewery. Colleagues of the dead man expressed shock over his death. Funeral arrangements are to be finalised.
