Kamla: Is this serious, or a public relations stunt?
Opposition UNC member, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who initiated the “Dhansook affair” when she read in Parliament a handwritten letter from Dhansook sent to Prime Minister Patrick Manning, containing the bribe allegations, was asked for her comment. She asked, “Is this a serious resignation, or a public relations stunt?” She said if Khan was serious, then he should have sent his letter of resignation to the President, and not the Prime Minister, since that was the legal procedure.
However, parliamentary sources said the proper way was for Khan to submit his resignation to the Prime Minister, who in turn, informs the President, who in turn acts on the advice of the Prime Minister. Persad-Bissessar, in her response, referring to the conversation between Dansam Dhansook and Ambassador Jerry Narace also said that, “it appears that there seems to be more in the mortar than the pestle.” She speculated that there seems to be “lots of machinations going on within the PNM.”She also asked whether Minister of Energy, Eric Williams, had also taken similar action in attempt to clear his name. She hoped that at the end of the day the air was cleared on this matter.
