Tranquil girls fight in church
GRADUATION services of the Tranquillity Government Secondary School at Trinity Cathedral in Port-of-Spain had to be halted temporarily yesterday, when a fight broke out between two female students. According to reports, while Canon Knolly Clake was officiating at the ceremony at 9.30 am, students and teachers had to scamper as the two students held on to each other, tearing at each others hair and clothes. They were hastily removed from the church and subdued. The occasion was the 2005 graduation ceremony for the CXC students. Investigations revealed that the fight began when one student accused the other of sitting in her seat, while the other student accused the first student of blocking her. When Newsday visited the church, teachers refused to speak about the fracas, while parents and students were not sure of all the details. However, one student said the attack was an old grievance fueled by the incident in the church. Newsday was told to speak to the Ministry of Education, but the ministry was not aware of the situation as it had not been reported. School principal Dr Mervyn Sandy described it as "a trivial matter." The teenagers were eventually allowed back in to the church to complete their graduation. Police confirmed that they have had almost weekly complaints of violence at the school over the last two to three years, and this latest act is just and extension of that violence.
