2 on trial for shooting, robbery

TWO MEN are on trial for shooting a Beetham resident and stealing a gold chain valued $5,000. Daniel "Buto" Osbourne and Akiaho Atiba, also called Reuben, are before Justice Rajendra Narine in the Port-of-Spain First Criminal Court charged with shooting Sean Joseph at Beetham Gardens on August 24, 2003. They are also charged with robbing Joseph of gold chain valued at $5,000.

The court heard that on August 24, 2003, Joseph was at his mother’s home at Beetham Gardens. Around 1 pm, shortly after he ate his lunch, Joseph walked out into the lane and sat down. While there, he was approached by the two accused whom he had known for several years.

The accused ordered Joseph to give him the gold chain he (Joseph) was wearing.

An explosion was then heard and Joseph felt a burning sensation near his belt.

Both accused had guns, the jury was told. Osbourne grabbed the gold chain off Joseph’s neck, and he and Atiba ran away. Joseph was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was examined. He was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the groin.

Both accused were later arrested by PC Ransome and handed over to the investigator. They were both identified by Joseph as the men who shot him and robbed him of his gold chain. When told by the police about the allegation, Osbourne remained silent. Atiba denied any involvement in the offence.
