Fisherman dies in early morning accident

A 33-year-old Tobago fisherman is believed to have died instantly early yesterday morning, when the rented open-top Suzuki vehicle he was driving ran off the main road and plunged into a ravine on Bacolet Street/Northside Road Exten-sion, Scarborough. Sean Berkeley of Castries Street, Scarborough, is Tobago’s fifth road fatality for the year. About 4 am,  according to reports, he lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree before plunging into the ravine.

It is suspected that the father of a six-year-old son, Christian, and daughter Dominique, eight, may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. According to family members, Berkeley was an avid sailor and was most likely returning from a party on No Man’s Island held as part of the Angostura Tobago Sailing Week Tournament in which he was a participant. His body and wrecked vehicle were found by a passer-by who alerted the Fire Service. His younger brother Elan said the family was informed of his death around 4.55 am by a friend who was accompanied by a police officer.

Sean was identified by his elder sister, Marva, who reported that his wallet containing important documents as well as an undisclosed sum of TT and US dollars, were missing. “At five in the morning that is not the type of news that you would want to hear.” A distraught Marva described her younger brother as a very giving person, as she consoled her neice, Dominique. Sean’s body was removed from the wreckage and taken to the Scarborough Regional Hospital. Officers attached to the Scarborough Police Traffic Division are continuing investigations.
