Student in court for setting fire to school
A 15-YEAR-OLD student of the Chaguanas Senior Comprehen-sive School yesterday appeared before a magistrate, charged with deliberately setting fire to one of the school’s buildings. The fire, which occurred on Monday in the school’s Vocational and Technical Department, resulted in damage to property valued at $.6 million. The male student was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and charged with arson by PC Rampersad of the Chaguanas Police Station. Yesterday, he appeared before Magistrate Margaret Alert in the Chaguanas First Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge. The Form Five student was not called on to plead. Court prosecutor Cpl Ramdass did not object to bail, and the magistrate granted the student bail in the sum of $20,000. The school’s Technical/Vocational wing, comprising four classrooms, was gutted after fire broke out around 2.25 pm on Monday. No one was injured. Firemen were able to contain the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the school. Police had initially detained three pupils of the school for questioning, but two were subsequently released.
