Discarded doctor wants to practice
A DOCTOR who was found guilty of “infamous or disgraceful conduct in a professional respect,” wants an interim order to stay the decision of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago to expunge his name from the register of medical personnel. Yesterday, Senior Counsel Seenath Jairam, who is heading the legal team for Dr Godfrey Raj-Kumar, argued for a stay of the Medical Board’s decision pending the hearing of the appeal brought by the discarded doctor.
Submissions were made by Jairam before Justice Ian Benjamin in the Port-of-Spain Fifth Civil Court. When hearing resumes on Wednesday, Fyard Hosein SC, will reply on behalf of the Medical Board. Dr Raj-Kumar is challenging the decision of the Medical Board, which by a decision dated March 7, informed him that he was guilty of ‘infamous or disgraceful conduct in a professional respect,’ and that his name would be erased from the register of the board.
Seenath Jairam SC headed Dr Raj-Kumar’s legal team, which included Ravi Rajcoomar, Rikki Harnanan, and Dharmendra Punwasee. The Medical Board was represented by Fyard Hosein SC, Rishi Dass, Ravi Hefes-Doon, and Nyree Alfonso. Dr Raj-Kumar is seeking an order that his name be re-entered on the register of medical practitioners, and that all records of the erasure of his name from the register be expunged or struck out from the Council of the board. He is also seeking an interim order suspending the operation of the decisions of the board pending the hearing and determination of his appeal.
