Trailer truck driver crushed to death

Ramnath Baliram, 42, a trailer truck driver of Los Almoros Road, Guaico, Tamana, died on the spot on Sunday night when he was crushed by the vehicle he was driving. His death brought this year’s road fatality figure to 70.

He is the second person killed within the last two days in East Trinidad.

On Saturday night Bismark Sladen was killed along the Manzanilla/Mayaro Road when he lost control of his taxi, which collided with a coconut tree.

According to police reports, at around 8.20 pm on Sunday, Baliram was driving a trailer truck with an excavator on the tray travelling north towards Sangre Grande. He lost control of the vehicle on the Biche Road. The excavator overturned into a valley, pulling the trailer truck in the process, causing the truck to topple, flattening the front of the truck.

Baliram, the lone occupant, was pinned under the truck when the truck crashed. He died instantly.

Reports revealed that he suffered a punctured lung and other serious injuries to his body.

Fire officers from the Sangre Grande Fire Station rushed to the scene and used the "Jaws of Life" to remove Baliram’s body.

District Medical Officer Surjadarora viewed the body and ordered its removal to the Sangre Grande Mortuary.

Cpls Monesh Baran, Christopher Fuentes PCs Randy Castaillo, Sheldon Kassiram and WPC Pamela Persad of the Sangre Grande Police Station went to the scene.

Cpl Baran is continuing enquiries.
