Imbert: Works Ministry a challenge

Having stated that the Science and Tertiary Education Ministry had been a positive experience, new Minister of Works and Transport, Colm Imbert, told the media yesterday that he views his new portfolio as a challenge, and that he would see what he could do about it.

Imbert took time out from a briefing session with resigned minister Franklin Khan to speak to the media.

Asked if the Prime Minister gave him the ministry for more ministerial stress once again, Imbert replied with a grin, "well it is a delivery ministry. It’s one of those ministries that just attracts commentary. It’s like National Security, Health and to a some extent, the Ministry of Education. Those are the ministries where you are in the public eye, and you can’t please everybody so you just attract commentary.

"There are some new issues though, which is what Khan is going to brief me on, such as the air and sea links between Trinidad and Tobago, the mass transit hub, the flooding infrastructure projects, and those are the things that I have to familiarise myself with, and that is what this briefing session is all about."

Khan was then asked if he had any advice to give to Imbert, to which he replied, accompanied by laughter, "I will give him it in private and he could choose afterwards whether he wants to take it or not. But I have confidence in minister Imbert."

Khan added that Imbert already had experience in the Works Ministry and would, therefore, know the playing field.

"I’m one who always believes that an engineering background will go a long way in helping you perform as a minister of works and transport. So I feel quite confident that he will do well," said Khan, who expressed his interest in becoming a minister soon.
