Caton to be buried today

THE POLICEMAN who allegedly shot 19-year-old Stephan Mervyn Caton in his head is expected to appear before a Point Fortin magistrate today charged with the youth’s murder. Caton’s funeral service will take place at 2 pm today at the Pentecostal Church at Coronation Park, Egypt Village. The service will be conducted by Pastor Kernal Nelson. Cat-on will be laid to rest at the Point Fortin cemetery. PC Sunil Tota-Maharaj, 30, was charged with murder last Friday — one day after the teenager died at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Caton, who had been in a coma and fighting for his life at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit,  died on Thursday, 13 days after he was shot in front of a bar at Egypt Village, Point Fortin. Caton was a pupil of the Siparia Senior Comprehensive School. Tota-Maharaj, attached to the Inter-Agency Task Force, had initially been charged with attempted murder and was on $750,000 bail. He was re-arrested hours after Caton’s death. Last Friday, Tota-Maharaj was taken before San Fernando Fourth Court Magistrate Armina Deonarine, who read the charge of murder to him.  Magistrate Deonar-ine then transferred the matter to the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court for today.
