Victim’s father: Bring back the hangman

Edward Cassie, father of a victim in Sunday night’s double murder in Blue Basin, Diego Martin, has hit out at the public and media for concentrating on his son, Kevin Cassie, and the relationship he had with Elena Cupid, instead of focusing on putting an end to crime.

"What they were doing there, or if they had a relationship, is not important. And only they will have the answer."

"What the media, police and public should be doing about ending crime is to bring back hangings. As a young boy growing up, I always knew hangings were at the Royal Gaol, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesdays before 6 am.

"Now when someone is set to be hanged, they go before the Appeal Court, Amnesty International and several other groups, resulting in not being hanged. All because of lawyers. "These criminals eventually come out and commit more crimes, killing innocent people. Then we have those charged with gun possession and drugs getting bail easy, walking about and committing more crimes. "The lawyers are making our judges and laws look incompetent. The judges needs to set dates for hanging, and the State must return to it immediately."

Elena and Kevin were found dead outside his cousin’s car. Their bodies had been burnt and they had been shot in their heads. Elena, 15, had slept at the home of Cassie, 23, the night before, and had attended an excursion to Quinam Bay earlier.
