Kidnappers shoot, release one of two victims

FIVE days after the Mohan cousins, Amit and Veedesh, were abducted, the kidnappers shot and dumped one of them on the South Trunk Road, Mosquito Creek, during the early hours of yesterday morning. Shortly after Veedesh Mohan, 20, was picked up by a passer-by, members of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad held two La Romaine men in connection with the kidnapping. Veedesh underwent emergency surgery yesterday at the San Fernando General Hospital to have a bullet removed from his hip. He was reported to be in a stable condition. His cousin Amit, 24, son of Priya’s Creation proprietor Inshan Mohan, remains in the hands of kidnappers.

Police believe that the shooting and release of Veedesh is a strategy being used by kidnappers to force Mohan to pay a $5 million ransom. According to reports, the driver of a vehicle saw a man lying at the side of the road around 1.45 am. The man stopped his vehicle and went to assist the person. He saw that the man was bleeding profusely from the hip. The man took the person (later identified as Veedesh) to the San Fernando General Hospital, and police were informed of the incident. Contacted by telephone, a distraught Mohan said, “I really sorry, but I can’t talk on this line right now. This line is very important — sorry.” Veedesh and cousin Amit were snatched at the back of Amit’s Gulf View home on Saturday night.
