Massive flooding in Central
VILLAGERS on Welcome Road, Cunupia, Endeavour Road and surrounding areas in Central Trinidad were marooned in their homes yesterday, following heavy rainfall on Wednesday night caused by Hurricane Emily. When the weather cleared, the damage was evident. Heavy flooding caused rivers to burst their banks, livestock was lost, and in Aranjuez, piles used to build the new Aranjuez bridge were washed away by flood waters, the San Juan river having flooded its banks. The bridge was closed and residents who use it to get to their homes were forced to use alternative routes. In Central Trinidad, farmers claim their food crops were lost in the deluge, along with livestock. At Welcome Road, Cunupia, residents awoke to find five feet of water surrounding their homes. Ranja Phillip said that he lost $20,000 worth of crops due to the flood waters. He said he had to wade through several feet of water to save bundles of bodi and cucumbers. Residents of St Helena and surrounding areas breathed a sigh of relief since the recently dredged Caroni River prevented flooding there.
