UTT not geared for the man in the street
THE EDITOR: It is with great concern that I have to put pen to paper. Money flows in this country and all we hear is that crime etc comes with developed nation status. Why do we have so much crime? We have failed the youth! Only those who can afford education will survive. Now we have UTT (University of Trouble and Treachery). How is this entity supposed to help the man on the street become a viable, contributing member of a workforce when Ken Julien’s thrust is geared towards engineering technology. Will he hire an engineering graduate to mend his wall, weld his gate, repair his car, rewire his home? Will a UTT graduate be able to satisfy the needs of society.
The technical institutes are a vital bridge between secondary school and the work environment. We understand that they are now to become part of UTT and craft and technician courses will be discontinued. Come on people, where are the voices of all the educators!! How can we let this happen to our young people? No wonder they turn to a life of crime. Check industry and do a survey of how many are graduates of the technical institutes. The politicians have money, but they don’t know how to spend it wisely. Heaven help us!
