Parties wrap up election campaigning
IN THE days leading up to Monday’s by-election for the Siparia East/San Francique South electoral district, several meetings are being held by political parties contesting the vacant seat. The United National Congress (UNC), People’s National Move-ment (PNM) and the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) are expected to wrap up their campaigning this weekend. The UNC, whose candidate is Christine Rogers-Deonarinesingh, held a rally Friday night at Thicke Village, Siparia Old Road, Siparia, addressed by Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday.
The NAR will hold a public meeting on Thursday night at the corner of Coora and Siparia Main Roads, one of three public events planned by the party this weekend. Speakers include NAR candidate Lee Aberdeen, political leader Lennox Sankersingh, deputy political leader Dr Carson Charles and Chairman Rawle Raphael. The NAR staged a public march on Friday from San Francique/ Charlo Junction to La Brea, “to highlight the political racism that dominates our country.” The NAR’s campaign will culminate with a motorcade today at 2 pm from its campaign office opposite the Siparia market. The PNM, whose candidate is Ivan St Clair, has been hosting a series of cottage meetings in the district. The PNM currently holds the seat. Yesterday both parties held rallies.
